Class 1 - Animal and Magnetism 1

How Animals Use Magnetism-

Monarch Butterflies use Earth's magnetic field and the sun's position to travel around 3,000 miles to New Mexico where they gather every year during winter. The daylight in winter tells them that they need to travel south. They all gather together in one spot, and it's possible that the area has magnetic anomalies that attract the monarchs. Researchers say that they can navigate with great accuracy, but with tiny brains.

Spiny Lobsters have homing abilities, and they can know where they are anywhere on Earths because of its magnetic field. They also use the magnetic field to migrate, they need to know what direction to go, and use "true navigation" to know where they are without using land marks. Their "true navigation" is their internal compass and sensitivity to the Earth's magnetic field. They are not a vertebrate, and most animals sensitive to the earth's magnetic field are, and the have "limited intelligence".
-National Geographic
Their scientific name is Panulirus Argus (Lobster)

Foxes use the Earth's magnetic field to hunt their prey. With the magnetic field, they can jump in a north to north-eastern direction, and jumping in that direction makes them more likely to catch the prey. Along with the magnetic field, they use a ring of shadows to tell where the prey is. When they jump in a north direction, while still in the air after jumping, they dive down and pounce on the prey. Their scientific name is Vuleps.

Sea Turtles can use earth magnetic field to to migrate and hide in the ocean. With being able to hide, the Sea Turtle can use the magnetic field to to find their prey, hide, then sneak up on it and get it to eat. Since Sea Turtles are so intelligent they use longitude and latitude to know where they are and use the magnetic field to travel. The migration in a sea turtle begins when the turtle is just a little bit bigger than a child's hand. Loggerhead Sea Turtles use Earths magnetism to find out where they are on the Earth just like the Spiny Lobsters. Sea Turtles are also sensitive to Earths magnetic field. They can detect these two components: Intensity and the strength of the magnetic field.

Pigeons can sense Earth's magnetic field through small magnetic particles in their beaks. They also use odor cues in the atmosphere to know where they are. Those magnetic particles in their beaks are iron crystals, which helps them seek north. When pigeons go to find food or something, and have to leave their home, they use the Earths magnetic field to return home. Those iron crystals help them also. That's why they are called Homing Pigeons, since they can return home without any problem.

Franz Mesmer-

Franz Mesmer lived in the 18th century, he was a doctor who had a theory that animals had magnetism in them. He would use several large magnets to cure people with mental disorders, or symilar problems. He started to use magnetism to cure people when a woman came to him and told him her conditions, she had a seizure, and used magnets on her. After an 'investigation" magnetism was found fake, he had to leave Paris where he was working, and was "forgotten". Mesmer invented, or discovered hypnosis. He said that their is a state where a person can be come mesmerism, he used his last name in mesmerism, and their mind was in a state where they were hypnotized.

How it is used for businesses-

Scientists use animals to experiment on lobsters to see how they react to a change in the magnetic field, and to record how foxes use the Earth's magnetic field to hunt. It was shown that foxes are more likely to catch prey jumping in a north to north-east direction, using a ring of shadows to know which way to jump. Researchers use monarchs to find out how they navigate, and to find out what they have in their brains or bodies that lets them navigate. Pigeons could be used in business if you work in an area where only you and animals are allowed, and pigeons or falcons could help you send your work (research) to your boss. A turtle could be use for magnetism when you are tracking a turtle, and documenting its life cycle. A monarch could be used if you have decided to find out why they go to New Mexico every year.

How Animals Use Magnetism Today-

Lobsters use magnetism to migrate, they use the Earth's magnetic field to know which way to go, and spiny lobsters use the Earth's magnetic field to know exactly where they are anywhere on Earth.

Foxes use the Earth's magnetic field along with rings of shadows, to know what direction to jump when they are hunting their prey.

Monarch butterflies use their internal compass/the Earth's magnetic field to find their way to the same spot in New Mexico.

Pigeons use magnetic particles in their beaks to know where North is, so when they want to find food they use those particles which are iron crystals.

Turtles use magnetism today for their life cycle, to know where to go when they need a shore for their eggs. Also, to travel during their life cycle, they need magnetism to know where the Gulf of Mexico is.

Advantages & Disadvantages-

The advantages of a Sea Turtle are that they use Earth's magnetic field to hide from predators. When the predators can't find the Sea Turtles, they won't die or get eaten. Another way the Sea Turtles use Earth's Magnetic field is to find their favorite feeding grounds. A feeding ground is an area where the animal finds its food, kills it, then eats it in that area. Disadvantage. Since a Sea Turtle is kind of big, they could be easily found, or able to be found by other predators.

The advantage of a pigeon is that they can sense some odor cues in the air so that they know where they are. Also they can easily return home with the help of Earth's magnetic field. A disadvantage of a pigeon is that what if a Homing Pigeon didn't find his home? What would it do? Where would it live? Would it be smart enough to reconstruct a new home?

An advantage of foxes using the magnetic field is, alsong with their other sences, they can use the magnetic field to know what direction to pounce since they are more likely to catch prey pouncing in a north to north-eastern direction. A disadvantage is that a fox maybe able to find the prey, but it might notice the fox if it jumps in a direction that wont help it find prey, or its prey notices that the fox it their and hides better from the fox, then it just lost its prey.

An advatage for lobsters is that when they migrate, they know what direction to travel, and some lobsters, like spiny lobsters, can use the magnetic field so well that they know where they are anywhere on Earth, even in a new place. A disadvantage is that when a lobster is migrating, it could run into a fishing boat or anything deadly to a lobster.

Advantages for monarchs are that every year they can all go to the same exact spot, even thought the butterflies dont come back, because they died. A disadvantage could be that the monarchs go to their spot in New Mexico to find it torn apart from a wildfire, and every year they would go to an unhealthy place where leftover fire could kill or harm them.

Personal Experience-

Molly’s Personal Experience
One personal experience I have had was with sea turtles and their magnetism. I have that experience because once, I went to the Camden Aquarium, after we had felt the turtle’s back, the staff told us about their migration patterns. They have to do with the sensitivity to magnetism. Also in class I read a Discovery Deck: “Sea Turtles in Bathing Suits”. It talked about how they use the earth’s magnetic field to migrate and find their way around the ocean.

Linzee's Personal Experience
I have seen an experiment on video, where a lobster was put into a small pool, with a large bar magnet across the top. The lobster reacted because it uses the Earth’s magnetic field to migrate, and some use it to find where they are, any place in the world. I have also seen a Yellowstone National Park documentary on foxes where it shows them hunting, in the snow but also any other time of year,, they pounce on their prey in a general north-eastern direction. If they jump in any other direction, they are less likely to catch the prey they are trying to hunt. Research shows that foxes jumping in a north-eastern direction catch their prey more often, and that they use a ring of shadows to know which direction to pounce to.

Chris’s Personal Experience
I know that to migrate, monarch butterflies use Earth’s magnetic field to know where to go. I learned that from a video that I saw, talking about how they migrate. I also learned that the magnetic field is weak, but they can still sense it. They also use crypto chromes to migrate when they return home. When pigeons are needed to send letters, in olden days, they would attach letters to the talons, and send them back. I have learned that from some of the science videos we have watched in class.
